چکیده

We use Hubble Space Telescope Wide-Field Camera 3 (HST/WFC3) rest-frame optical imaging to select a pilot sample of star-forming galaxies in the redshift range z = 2.00 − 2.65 whose multicomponent morphologies are consistent with expectations for major mergers. We follow up this sample of major merger candidates with Keck/NIRSPEC longslit spectroscopy obtained in excellent seeing conditions (FWHM ∼ 0.5 arcsec) to obtain Hα-based redshifts of each of the morphological components in order to distinguish spectroscopic pairs from false pairs created by projection along the line of sight. Of six pair candidates observed, companions (estimated mass ratios 5:1 and 7:1) are detected for two galaxies down to a 3σ limiting emission-line flux of ∼ 10 erg s cm. This detection rate is consistent with a ∼ 50% false pair fraction at such angular separations (1 − 2 arcsec), and with recent claims that the star-formation rate (SFR) can differ by an order of magnitude between the components in such mergers. The two spectroscopic pairs identified have total SFR, SFR surface densities, and stellar masses consistent on average with the overall z ∼ 2 star forming galaxy population. 6 v 1 3 A ug 1 99 6 Close Pairs of Field Galaxies in the CNOC 1 Redshift Survey

A redshift sample of 545 field galaxies is used to examine how the galaxy merger rate changes with redshift, and how mergers affect the observed properties of galaxies in close pairs. Close pairs are defined as those with projected separations less than 20 h −1 kpc. At a mean redshift of 0.33, it is found that 7.1 ± 1.4 % of galaxies are in close physical pairs, compared to 4.3 ± 0.4 % locally....

Close galaxy pairs at z 3: a challenge to UV luminosity abundance matching

We use a sample of z ∼ 3 Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs) to examine close pair clustering statistics in comparison to cold dark matter ( CDM)-based models of structure formation. Samples are selected by matching the LBG number density, ng, and by matching the observed LBG 3D correlation function of LBGs over the two-halo term region. We show that ultraviolet (UV) luminosity abundance matching canno...

Astronomy & Astrophysics GMASS ultradeep spectroscopy of galaxies at z ∼ 2 , , VII . Sample selection and spectroscopy

Context. Ultra-deep imaging of small parts of the sky has revealed many populations of distant galaxies, providing insight into the early stages of galaxy evolution. Spectroscopic follow-up has mostly targeted galaxies with strong emission lines at z > 2 or concentrated on galaxies at z < 1. Aims. The populations of both quiescent and actively star-forming galaxies at 1 < z < 2 are still under-...

The evolution of the galaxy B-band rest-frame morphology to z ∼ 2: new clues from the K20/GOODS sample

We present a detailed analysis of the evolution of the rest-frame B-band morphology of K-selected galaxies with 0 < z < 2.5. This work is based on the K20 spectroscopic sample (Ks < 20) located within the Chandra Deep Field South area, coupled with the public deep GOODS HST+ACS multi-band optical imaging available in that field. Thanks to the spectroscopic completeness of this catalog reaching ...

Calibrating Redshift Distributions beyond Spectroscopic Limits with Cross-correlations

We describe a new method that can measure the true redshift distribution of any set of objects that are studied only photometrically. Measuring the angular cross-correlation between objects in the photometric sample with objects in some spectroscopic sample as a function of the spectroscopic z, along with other, standard correlation measurements, provides sufficient information to reconstruct t...
